Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or a wet-area pergola is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. Water and electricity are a nightmare pairing. Steam settles on everything, creating these tiny invisible paths for electricity to wander where it shouldn’t. One wrong move, and you’ve got a short circuit or a ground fault on your hands. To keep things safe, we focus on three main spots: the lamp itself, the seals, and the grounding. The battle against leaks We go with high-purity quartz glass for the heating element. Why? Because it doesn’t conduct electricity. But here’s the catch: the glass isn’t where things usually go wrong. The real danger is where the wires actually plug into the lamp. In a dry room, standard open-air connectors are fine. In a bathroom? Not a chance. We swap those out for IP65-rated sealed housings. They use silicone gaskets that act like a raincoat for your terminals, keeping steam and droplets out. If you use a basic R7s or SK15 socket without a seal, you’re basically waiting for your breaker to trip. It’s that simple. Handling the “What Ifs” Even with great seals, you want a backup plan. That’s why these heaters need to be part of a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) system. We build the chassis with a dedicated earth ground. This way, if the internal insulation ever fails, the electricity heads straight into the ground instead of through you. To make sure it actually works, we run a “high-pot” test. It’s basically a stress test to ensure the insulation doesn’t snap under a voltage spike. The trade-offs Now, there’s a bit of a give-and-take here. Waterproofing makes things bulkier. Those heavy-duty enclosures take up more space and can slightly block the heat pattern. You lose a tiny bit of heat distribution, but you gain the peace of mind that you aren’t risking a shock. One last thing: watch your wires. Standard PVC will melt the second it gets close to the lamp. Stick with silicone-coated or fiberglass-braided wiring. It can handle the heat without burning through, which keeps the whole setup running safely.
