
Stop Just Swapping Your Quartz Lamps
Replacing a burnt-out quartz heater feels like a simple maintenance chore. You pull the old one out, pop a new one in, and call it a day. But here’s the thing: if you’re just swapping a dead lamp for another one with the same wattage, you might be ignoring a bigger problem. We see this all the time. A shop replaces a tube, only for it to blow again three months later. Usually, the lamp isn’t the problem. It’s just the part that happens to break first because something else in the setup is wrong. It’s all about the heat density. Quartz glass is finicky. If the temperature ramps up too fast or unevenly, you get internal stress and cracks. When we come in to look at your setup, we aren’t just checking a spec sheet for voltage. We’re looking at how those watts are actually packed into every millimeter of that tube. If you cram a high-wattage lamp into a tight space without thinking about where the energy reflects, you get hotspots. Those hotspots eat the filament alive and can even warp the glass. The gap matters. A lamp might be rated for a certain temperature on paper, but the real world is different. If the distance between your heater and the workpiece is off by even a few millimeters, your infrared absorption tanks. Then there’s the wiring. A loose terminal creates resistance, which means you’re generating heat in your cables instead of in your lamp. You’re essentially starving the heater of the power it needs to do its job. The speed trap. It’s tempting to push more power through a quartz tube to get your cycle times down. Faster is better, right? Not exactly. The trade-off is a shorter lifespan for your gear and a massive strain on your cooling system. If your fans can’t pull that ambient heat away from the ends of the lamp, the seals will eventually give up. That’s why we do on-site diagnostics.
