
Getting the Heat Right in Long Glass Tunnel Kilns
If you’re preheating glass for precision cutting, you already know the struggle. You need the temperature to be exactly the same across the whole sheet. But when you’re dealing with those ultra-long tunnel kilns, standard lamps usually leave these annoying cold spots right where the units meet. It’s a headache. That’s why we build custom infrared heating units that stretch past 2 meters. No gaps. No cold spots. Just steady heat.
The Trick to Long Lamps
Here is the thing about lamps longer than 2 meters: voltage drop is a real pain. If you aren’t careful, the ends of the tube get hot while the middle stays lukewarm. We fix this by tweaking the wattage-per-centimeter. It sounds technical, but it basically means we balance the power so the heat flux is dead-on consistent across the entire surface of your glass. And then there’s the quartz. We use high-purity quartz glass because it can handle the heat, but long tubes have a habit of bowing. If your brackets are too rigid, the glass just snaps. To stop that, we use a floating support system. It gives the quartz room to breathe and expand without breaking.
Making it Work in Your Shop
By going with a continuous layout, we get rid of the gaps you find in those modular setups. We also beef up the end-caps and connectors. High current can burn through cheap parts, so we use heavy-duty gear that actually lasts. Depending on what kind of glass you’re running, we can coat the quartz. If you need to get up to temperature fast, shortwave is the way to go. If you’re working with thicker sheets and need the heat to soak in deep, medium-wave is your best bet.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Just a heads-up: running these 2-meter+ units means your wiring footprint grows. You’ll want to double-check your power distribution blocks. These arrays pull a lot of juice, and you don’t want to be tripping breakers every time you flip the switch at start-up. Also, please—don’t skimp on the ventilation. The heat inside a closed tunnel is intense. If you don’t have a dedicated way to cool the lamp housings, you’ll end up baking your own wiring insulation. And nobody wants to deal with that.
