
Why Your Infrared Heater Actually Dies (And How to Fix It)
Here is a little secret about bathroom infrared heaters: it’s rarely the heating element itself that gives up the ghost. Usually, the real culprit is the lead-wire insulation. Think about it. When you’re cranking up the wattage, that heat doesn’t just move forward to warm you up. It creeps backward, right toward the electrical connections. If the spot where the quartz tube meets the wire isn’t sealed perfectly, you get “thermal leakage.” Basically, the heat leaks into places it shouldn’t be.
What’s happening under the hood?
Most cheap heaters use basic glues. They work for a while, but they can’t handle the constant cycle of getting scorching hot and then cooling down. Eventually, the seal cracks. Once that happens, moisture and oxygen sneak in. This ruins the wire jacket, making it brittle and shrink. We call this “high-temperature aging,” but in plain English? The insulation just dies. When those bare wires finally touch… pop. Your unit shorts out. We do things differently. We use OEM-grade potting compounds—basically a heavy-duty, heat-resistant sealant—to create a vacuum-tight bond. This stops “wicking,” which is when heat travels up the wire core and melts the outer layer from the inside out.
Don’t settle for “dipped in glue”
A lot of budget builds skip the hard part: the curing stage. They just dip the wires in some adhesive and call it a day. But to do it right, you need controlled temperature curing. This makes sure the sealant doesn’t shrink the first few times you turn the heater on. It keeps the electrical strength steady and safe. If you’re looking at a seal, check the footprint. It should look smooth and uniform. If you see air bubbles, be careful. Those bubbles turn into hotspots, and those hotspots eat through PVC or silicone jackets way faster than they should.
One quick heads-up
There is a trade-off here. Because our seals are so much tougher, the lead wires are a bit stiffer. You can’t just bend them aggressively during installation. If you force a sharp kink right at the seal point, you might actually crack the quartz tube. Just give the wires a gentle, gradual curve, and you’ll be golden.
