Most bathroom heaters are a waste of electricity. They spend forever trying to warm up the air in the room, and you’re still shivering while you brush your teeth. We do things differently. We use short-wave infrared tech in our mirror heaters. Instead of fighting the cold air, the heat hits you directly. It’s an immediate warmth. Making it “Smart”
If you want to trigger this with an app or a voice command, you’ll need a reliable relay or a TRIAC dimmer circuit. Here is how it works: you tell your smart home to “warm up,” the circuit closes, and the lamps kick in. Since infrared doesn’t rely on moving air to work, the heat transfer is basically instant. It feels like stepping into a spring morning, even if it’s freezing outside, the second those lamps hit full power.
The Nitty-Gritty Hardware
We use high-wattage quartz lamps because they heat up fast. And that mirror? It isn’t just there so you can see your face. It actually acts as a reflector, pushing the heat beam straight toward you. But a word of caution on the wiring. These heaters pull a lot of current. If you plug this into a cheap smart relay that isn’t rated for the initial power surge, you’re going to fry the switch in a few months. If your unit is over 1500W, just use a heavy-duty contactor. Trust me on this.
The Reality Check
Automation is great, but it’s not perfect. Wi-Fi drops. Hubs freeze. If that happens, you don’t want to be stuck in a cold bathroom. That’s why we always put in a physical override switch. Plus, there’s the heat issue. Those IR lamps get hot—really hot. If the mirror housing doesn’t have a way to breathe, that heat can soak into the smart controller and kill the capacitors. To keep your electronics from dying early, make sure the control board is tucked away from the heating element.
