
Why your bathroom needs an IP55 infrared heater (and why those old lamps keep dying)
Ever notice how those standard halogen heat lamps in the bathroom always seem to burn out right when you need them? It’s not a coincidence. Those things just aren’t built for the steam. Once moisture gets inside the housing, it’s game over. That’s why we’ve been moving people over to IP55-rated infrared systems. It just makes more sense.
What’s the deal with “IP55”?
If you aren’t a tech geek, that sounds like a random code. But in plain English, it means the unit is sealed tight. It keeps out dust and can handle water splashing at it from any angle. Think about your bathroom. You’ve got showers, steam, and humidity constantly hitting the walls. We use sealed gaskets and special cabling so the guts of the heater stay dry. Without that protection, moisture settles on the electrical contacts, everything starts to corrode, and suddenly your heater is a paperweight.
Warmth you can actually feel
Most heaters try to warm up the air. But if you’ve got a drafty bathroom or a window cracked open, that warm air just floats away. You’re left shivering while the heater works overtime. Infrared is different. It uses shortwave radiation—which is a fancy way of saying it doesn’t bother with the air. Instead, the heat travels straight to your skin and the surfaces around you. It’s instant. We use quartz tubes for the heating element because they can go from ice-cold to scorching hot in seconds without cracking. You flip the switch, and you feel the warmth immediately. No waiting around.
A few things to keep in mind
If you’re swapping these into an old ceiling or wall, they usually fit right where your old light fixtures were. But here’s the catch: these things pull a lot of power to get that instant heat. If you try to cram three or four 1500W units onto one 20A circuit, you’re going to trip your breaker. Definitely check your wiring first. You want to make sure your electrical panel can actually handle the load. Also, because they’re sealed for moisture protection, the housings are a bit bulkier than a simple lightbulb. Just make sure you’ve got a little extra clearance during your renovation so the unit sits flush and looks clean against the ceiling.
