Ever walked into a locker room or changing area and felt that immediate, bone-deep chill? It happens all the time. You’ve got these massive ceilings and doors that are constantly swinging open and shut, letting all the warmth escape. Most people try to fix this with forced-air heating. But here’s the problem: heat rises. You end up warming the ceiling while the people on the floor are still shivering. We do things differently. We use ceiling-mounted infrared (IR) heaters. Instead of trying to warm the air, these units beam heat directly onto the people and the floors. It’s like standing in a patch of sunlight on a cold winter day.
That “Instant” Warmth
You know that feeling in high-end gyms where you step inside and immediately feel cozy? That’s shortwave IR technology. Most heaters need time to “wake up,” but shortwave elements hit their peak temperature in seconds. We pick systems that hit a specific wavelength (between 0.76 and 1.4 microns) because that’s what actually penetrates the skin. It doesn’t just warm the surface; it makes you feel warm, fast.
Getting Them Installed
Putting these on the ceiling is the smartest move. It gives you a wider spread, meaning you cover more ground with less power. One heads-up on the electrical side: these things pull a lot of current the moment they kick on. We always wire them into their own dedicated circuits. You don’t want your breakers tripping just because a few heaters decided to start at the same time.
Finding the Sweet Spot
There is a catch, though. If you aren’t careful, you’ll create “hot spots.” If the units are too low or the wattage is cranked too high, the person standing directly under the lamp is going to feel like they’re being grilled, while the person two feet away is still cold. It’s all about balancing the height of the ceiling with the power of the unit. To fix this, we usually install dimmers or multi-stage controllers. That way, you can dial the heat back when the building is already warm. It keeps people comfortable and stops you from throwing money away on wasted electricity.
