
Stop Your Glass From Cracking: A Real-Talk Guide to IR Lamps
There is nothing worse than watching a piece of glassware shatter because the temperature spiked too fast. It’s frustrating, it’s wasteful, and it usually happens right when you think you’ve got the process dialed in. The problem is simple: cold glass hates sudden heat. If you hit it too hard, it cracks. That’s where shortwave infrared (IR) lamps come in. Instead of just blasting heat, these lamps let you tweak the power in milliseconds. It creates a thermal buffer, giving the glass a chance to breathe and adjust without snapping. Why this works better than an oven Think about a convection oven. It’s slow. If you want to change the temperature, you’re waiting minutes for the air to catch up. These IR lamps are different. They use a tungsten filament in a quartz envelope that reacts the second you change the voltage. By pairing them with an SCR or PWM controller, you can basically “throttle” the heat. I like to call it a “soft-start.” You gently nudge the glass up to its annealing point rather than shocking it. It’s the difference between stepping into a lukewarm bath and jumping into boiling water. The gear you actually need When we’re picking out lamps, we go with high-purity quartz. It just lets the IR light through more efficiently. Then there’s the connector situation. You’ll see R7s and SK15. If you just want something easy to swap out, R7s is the way to go. But if your production line shakes or vibrates a lot, go with a more secure fit. You don’t want a lamp shaking loose and melting your socket. One more thing: watch your heat footprint. High-density lamps are great for moving product fast, but they throw off a massive amount of radiant energy. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, you’re going to end up warping your reflectors. It’s a balancing act. Getting it right on the floor To keep things from breaking, you’ve got to be smart about where the lamps sit. Overlap your heat zones. If you leave “cold spots,” the glass contracts unevenly, and you’re right back to square one with cracks and breaks. These lamps usually drop right into the slots where your old heating elements were. Just a heads-up, though—check your power supply first. The “initial strike” when these things kick on can pull a lot of current, and you don’t want to trip a breaker in the middle of a run.
